The Piney Meetinghouse Bridge Replacement project was put into effect due to a bridge inspection in 2011 that revealed the bridge was structurally deficient. The existing bridge, built in 1950, is a single span concrete T-Beam structure carrying a 24 foot roadway. The new bridge includes a single span prestressed concrete New England Extreme Tee (NEXT) beam structure carrying 24 foot roadway and a 4 foot shoulder on each side. This width allows for the implementation of safe onroad bicycling.
Fort Myer Construction was responsible for the removal and disposable of the existing traffic barrier, removal and disposal of portions of the existing bridge; constructing the new bridge; constructing 210 ft. of the roadway to the south and the north of the new bridge including installation of a W-beam traffic barrier with the alignment of Watts Branch road.
In the effort to reduce the time of construction, and impacts to residents and commuters, Accelerated Bridge Construction System (ABC) techniques were utilized. The techniques of the ABC System include, innovative planning, design, materials, and construction methods all used in a safe, cost-effective manner.
